The annual Texas Citizen Bee Regional Competition was held April 12, 2010, at the Region 8 Education Service Center in Mt. Pleasant. The competition is open to all high school students. The Citizen Bee promotes civic understanding, community pride, and personal responsibility through an academic competition based on political and cultural history, geography, economics and current events. This year four schools competed. Avery, Hooks, Mount Pleasant, and Simms James Bowie brought a total of 15 competitors.
In the first round of competition, the 15 competitors had to take a written test. In the second round, the competitors answered four questions verbally for judges. The combined scores from both rounds determined the overall winner. The winner this year was Will Giles from Avery High School. Will is the representative for Region 8 in the state competition to be held in Austin on May 15, 2010. The winner received a trophy, while the 2nd and 3rd place finishers received plaques. All of the participants received medals and their teachers were also given a gift.
